Safe & Sober Driving for Work Seminar |
|
Date: 24 May 2012, 10:00am–1:00pm Driving for work involves risks for your employees but also for other road users. Employers, managers and supervisors need to manage the risks that employees face and create when they drive for work. After speeding, drink-driving remains the second biggest contributory factor leading to road crashes in Europe. In companies, the alcohol interlock is used as a quality assurance tool to comply with a company's alcohol and drugs policy. With the alcohol interlock, a company can guarantee that they only use sober drivers for their transport services. Many companies have already had alcohol interlocks in their vehicles as an excellent guarantee of safe and sober transport services. More and more municipalities, county councils, public agencies and companies that source passenger and goods transport services are making alcohol interlocks a requirement in negotiating contracts and other public tenders. In this context, the European Transport Safety Council together with the Road Safety Authority (RSA), the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and An Garda Siochana are setting up a Business to Business seminar in Dublin on the implementation and use of alcohol interlocks in small, large and public companies. Debates will focus on the good practice in developing organisational policy and process for alcohol as well as implementation processes, timeline, costs, benefits and feedback from experienced companies. |

Event International Conference on Road Safety at Work Road traffic crashes are a leading cause of workplace death, injury, and disability in many countries around the world. Workers, families, businesses, and society all suffer the consequences of workplace crashes. Because rapid motorization and economic development go hand in hand, workers in the developing world are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the risk of road traffic crashes. The International Conference on Road Safety at Work, organized by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and co-sponsors, will provide a forum for business, labor, policy makers, and the research community to address this important topic. The ‘white paper’ from the event, prepared by NIOSH contractor Dr. Will Murray, serves two purposes: to provide delegates to the International Conference on Road Safety at Work with a global assessment of occupational road safety as background for participation in the conference; and to stimulate discussion that will lead to a ‘proceedings’ document from the conference. After the conference, Dr. Murray and conference organizers will collaborate to incorporate information from conference presentations and discussions into this draft document.
