Driving for Work Resources for Employers
Approximately 1 in 3 road traffic collisions in Ireland involve drivers who are using their vehicles for work. Studies show that those who drive company cars have 30-40% more collisions than not at-work drivers and this risk increases for those who drive more than 40,000 km per annum
Research in Ireland commissioned by DriverFocus in December 2007 (see 'Driver Wellbeing' for full report), indicated that up to 42% of leading Irish business did not have driving for work policies as part of their Health and Safety management system and alarmingly, the same study showed that 31% of companies never provided driver training to their employees.
Responsibility for safe Driving for Work rests both with employers and drivers.
Health and safety law applies to all on-the-road work activities. It is vital that the risks associated with the three elements of work related road safety:
• The Driver
• The Vehicle
• The Journey
are properly managed within a workplace health and safety management system.
This Section of our website is aimed at employers, managers and supervisors whose staff drive vehicles (including company cars, vans or private cars), ride motorcycles or even cycle for work. It also applies to self-employed people, people whose main job is driving, and those who drive occasionally for the purpose of their work.
