ABB Group is a global provider of technology and services to utility providers and industrial companies. ABB Ireland Ltd operates in five locations around Ireland, and has a fleet of 90 vehicles. The company was nominated in the Partnership category with DriverFocus and won the Company Driver Safety Award (smaller fleets category) at Brake’s Fleet Safety Awards in 2013.

ABB Ireland commissioned a fleet safety audit in 2009, conducted by DriverFocus, to establish and benchmark existing policies, procedures and practices. ABB senior managers, along with some drivers, were interviewed by DriverFocus. This approach was taken to recognise factors contributing to occupational road risk at both organisational and individual driver level.

The results of the audit were used to introduce a comprehensive driving for work policy, covering management, driver, vehicle and journey. The policy informs the company’s Safe Driving for Work (SDFW) program.

The SDFW program began in 2009. Its primary aim is to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions involving ABB employees whilst driving for work. In 2011, the program was extended to grey fleet drivers.

The program includes:
•    a comprehensive driver handbook;
•    on- and offline risk assessments and skills evaluations;
•    targeted online training for all drivers, plus invited friends and family; and
•    an in-vehicle program including a behavioural telematics pilot.

Management-level activities undertaken included:
•    a senior management forum ;
•    an awareness-raising driver safety day;
•    workshops for line managers with a fleet instructor.

To date, 50 ABB company drivers and a further 40 grey fleet drivers participated in the SDFW program.

ABB Ireland’s annual collision costs fell by more than 60% over the three years following introduction of the SDFW program in 2009. Between 2007 and 2012, the average annual crash cost per vehicle fell from €375 (2007-2009) to €111 (2010-2012).

ABB now has a rolling three-year action plan to improve further and sustain its achievements in safe driving and fleet safety performance.
